Hazelgrove, Allan Ronald Derrett

Allan Ronald Hazelgrove, a Chemical Engineer and librarian at Du Pont, amateur photographer and a bibliographer in Kingston, Ontario, was born 5 May 1912. He obtained his B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering at Queen's University in 1939. He worked for Defence Industries Ltd. in Nobel, Ontario from 1940 to 1944 as a Laboratory Supervisor and development team member developing military explosives. He was transferred to C.I.L's Central Research Laboratory in McMasterville, Quebec in 1944, where he remained until the division of the company into C.I.L. and Du Pont of Canada. In 1954, he was selected to assist in the detail design of the Du Pont's Kingston Research Centre, where he then became Services Group Leader. By 1962, he would devote the majority of his time to the operations of the Research Centre Library.

Hazelgrove also concerned himself with elements of Kingston area history, writing: "(i)n 1960 it occurred to me that a great number of irreplaceable stone buildings were being wrecked or burned or allowed to go to ruin. I decided that there should be a record in the form of at least one picture of each building, whether it had any great architectural significance or not." Hazelgrove also served as a member of

Power, Joseph

In 1873, Joseph Power (1849-1925) became a partner in his father's architectural firm, which then became known as Power & Son. This name was continued until 1919, in spite of John Power's death in 1882. Around 1880 a younger son, Thomas R.P. Power (1859-1930) also joined the practice although the name of the firm was never changed to reflect this addition to the practice. Colin Drever (1887-1975), educated at Heriot Watt College in Edinburgh and emigrated to Canada in 1911, worked for Power & Son from 1912 to 1915 and again in 1818. He was taken in as a partner in 1919, at which time drawings in the Power Collection began to be signed Power Son & Drever. Powers retired in 1923 leaving Dever on his own until 1945 when he was joined by Harry P. Smith (1905-1983), a graduate of the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Architecture degree (1929). Drever retired in 1967.

Haffell J. Powell, the son of James William Powell, was a photographer. Upon his father's blindness, Haffell continued operation of Powell Studio from 1894 until 1906.

Brockington, Leonard Walter

Born in Cardiff, Wales, (1888), and educated at the University of Wales and the University of Alberta, L.W. Brockington, government advisor, practiced law for some time in Prime Minister R.B. Bennett's law firm in Calgary, and was Calgary city solicitor, 1922-1935. In 1936, he became first chairman of the CBC and in 1940, and 1941, he was a special wartime assistant to Prime Minister Mackenzie King. He served as advisor on Commonwealth affairs to the British Ministry of Information, 1942-1943. He was later, president of Odeon Theatres, and rector of Queen's University. He died in 1966.

The Canadian Institute of Guided Ground Transport was established in 1970 under the jurisdiction of Queen's University, and with the strong participation and support of the Canadian Transport Commission, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific. The aims of the Institute were "to provide integrated interdisciplinary research to meet the long-term needs of Canadian guided ground transportation, and to increase the supply of graduates who have knowledge of and interest in transportation systems." All members of the Institute formed the Council. In 1973, the Board membership consisted of the Executive Director; three members not affiliated with the Institute as appointed by University Senate; three from the Council, one of whom was elected, and two of whom were to be University staff selected by the Principal; and one each appointed by the Government of Canada, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific.
The Institute ceased operations in 1994.
