Franklin F. Appleton, publisher, was born in 1893 at Toronto. In 1912 he became assistant manager of the Musson Book Company. Promoted to manager in 1916, he became vice-president in 1920. In 1929, he joined George J. McLeod Ltd. as vice-president. In 1930, he organized the Canadian branch of the Scottish firm of Collins; he managed the firm of William Collins Sons and Company for 17 years. His first independant venture was Hugh MacLennan's "Barometer Rising" in 1941, followed in 1942 by Grace Campbell's "Thorn Apple Tree" and in 1943 by John D. Robin's "The Incomplete Angler". He died in 1951.
